Normally I don't like crowded places, but Christmas is a good time to make an exception ;)
So over the weekend we decided to drive to the two small towns in the Moselle valley: Cochem and Bernkastel Kues. The two small towns are beautiful and not too crowded, especially during this pandemic. Due to Covid-19, Christmas markets across Germany have been all canceled. Instead of organizing a Christmas market packed with so many wooden stalls as always, Bernkastel-Kues will decorate the whole town and especially the old town area. Some small Christmas stalls are scattered across the street and along the banks of the Mosel River.
Since hotels and airbnbs in Germany are not being opened right now, it was just a short day trip. The whole Moselle valley is beautiful and next spring we will be back for sure - Here you have so many beautiful little old towns to visit. At that time I will have an in-depth review for everyone :)
Bình thường mình không thích chốn đông người, nhưng Giáng sinh là một ngoại lệ. Vậy là cuối tuần cả nhà đã quyết định lái xe tới hai thị trấn nhỏ Cochem và Bernkastel Kues. Hai thị trấn nhỏ xinh và không quá đông đúc, nhất là trong thời đại dịch như này.
Do Covid nên các chợ Giáng Sinh khắp nước Đức đã bị huỷ. Thay vì tổ chức chợ Giáng sinh với muôn vàn gian hàng gỗ như mọi khi, Bernkastel sẽ trang trí cả thành phố và đặc biệt là khu vực phố cổ. Các gian hàng Giáng Sinh nhỏ nằm rải rác trong phố cũng như dọc bờ sông Mosel.
Vì hiện nay khách sạn nhà nghỉ ở Đức không được mở nên chúng mình chỉ đi nhanh trong ngày rồi về - hẹn mùa xuân sang năm sẽ quay lại vùng thung lũng Moselle với muôn vàn thị trấn cổ nhỏ xinh như này để chơi dài hơn - lúc đó mình sẽ có review kĩ cho mọi người :)

"Now that the lockdown has not really contained the number of infections, there can be no Christmas market as we know it from the past," explains city mayor Wolfgang Port.
"The Christmas stalls will all be set up - not as sales stalls, however, but as shop window or information stands. In addition, there will be appropriate lighting and sound, so that at least some Christmas market flair is created,"
All the other attractions that make Bernkastel-Kues special such as the giagantic Advent calendar in the Adler Pharmacy or the pyramid at the Bärenbrunnen will also be on display.
Advent calendar: a German tradition
The advent calendar has been around since the 19th century in many Christian countries. From around 1850 there were so-called Advent timers, which showed the remaining time until Christmas Eve. There were different variants: Some embellished the walls with 24 Christmas pictures or simply drew 24 lines with chalk on the wall. Small tear-off calendars or marked candles that burn a little bit down every day are still popular today.
The first printed advent calendar came onto the market around 1902. A Munich publisher allegedly did this in memory of a family custom: his mother once attached 24 biscuits to a box for him to make it easier for his son to wait for Christmas.
From around 1920 calendars with doors that could be opened became widespread. In the 1950s, the first advent calendars were created, which, in addition to pictures, were also filled with cookies, chocolate and other sweets. Small toys have also been added to the advent calendars over time. Small children in particular can sometimes hardly wait for the presents to be handed out. With one little surprise a day, however, the wait is not that difficult.
From tradition to today's trend
In addition to the ordinary calendars with chocolate, there is a growing variety of calendars in which a different surprise awaits every day. Cosmetics, beer, tea, erotic items or calendars with treats for dogs and cats: almost every industry now brings beautifully packaged Advent calendars onto the market.
Điều đặc biệt ở Bernkastel Kues đó là cả căn nhà to đùng chính là cuốn lịch Mùa Vọng. Mỗi cánh cửa sổ sẽ là một ngày và từ ngày 01.12 tới ngày 24.12 họ sẽ mở một ô cửa sổ.
Lịch Mùa Vọng là gì?
Lịch Mùa Vọng thường bắt đầu từ ngày 01 đến ngày 24.12.
Lịch truyền thống thường là tấm thẻ hay tấm bảng lớn với các “ô cửa sổ". 24 cửa sổ, mỗi cửa sổ đại diện cho mỗi ngày của tháng 12 đến ngày Giáng sinh. Các cửa sổ có đánh số và sắp đặt không theo thứ tự để cho người được tặng phải tìm, khi mở để lộ phía trong là một hình ảnh, bài thơ, một phần của một câu chuyện hoặc một món quà nhỏ, như đồ chơi hoặc socola, kẹo…
Ngày nay mọi người thường làm Lịch là 24 hộp quà nhỏ chứ ít ai làm theo kiểu thẻ nữa. Nhất là với trẻ con thì bạn hiểu chúng háo hức như thế nào khi mỗi ngày đều nhận được một món quà nhỏ :)
