How I Make My Cinematic YouTube Videos
Creating good YouTube videos a continuous learning process that involves a combination of different skills. To adapt to change and grow ourselves which is increasingly important in today's rapidly changing world. Today, I'm going to show you a few tips for making a good YouTube video.
The best gear is the one you already have
This is a popular saying that highlights the idea that the quality of a photo/video is not solely determined by the camera equipment, but also by the photographer's skills, creativity, the moment captured. While having high-end camera equipment can certainly provide advantages in terms of image quality, features, and flexibility, it's important to remember that the camera itself is just a tool.
I think the true key to great photo/video lies in understanding composition, colour, lighting, perspective, and other fundamental aspects of the art.
Understanding lighting is crucial for creating better photos and videos: types of lighting, quality & direction of light, how different lighting evokes different emotions. Pay attention to how natural light changes throughout the day and in different weather conditions.
All video reels on my Instagram was created with my phone and they don’t get any less engagement comparing to my YouTube videos.
If your budget is tight, I highly recommend investing in a good microphone. Good sound is more important than good visual.
2. Music
I select the music before filming each video. The right music can instantly establish the mood we want to convey in our video whether we’re aiming for excitement, nostalgia, relaxation. By selecting music that resonates with the content of the video, we can amplify the emotional impact of our storytelling.

3. Good Workflow
I want to document my daily life without effecting the quality of my life. A good, efficient creating process is the key. Here is my workflow:
- Being inspired: brainstorming video ideas based on my personality and my lifestyle. It could be how I make my own shampoo bar or how I take care of my garden…
- Researching: gather some more information related to the topic that I might not know before. Learning is a never-ending process. Thanks to the wide range of resources available today, learning has become incredibly accessible and convenient. Be inspired from books, YouTube videos, Pinterest, blogs... Taking inspiration, changing it and making it your own. Incorporating your unique perspective, creativity, and personal touch to create something new and original.
- Scripting: write an outline that guides the narration of the video. It could be a poem that I wrote down in the past, or a writing piece from my own journal, omething that comes into my mind at the very moment of filming, or simply provide the food recipes or DIY instructions...
- Pre-production: select tshe music, decide the mood of the video, plan the visuals…
- Filming: I keep the filming as much simple and casual as possible.
- Import footage into my video editing software.
Being organized during the editing process is essential to create a smooth and efficient workflow.
- Keep related files in separate folder.
- Use separate tracks for different elements: video, audio, music...
- Learn and utilize keyboard shortcuts to speed up the editing.
- I always add music and narration to the timeline first.
- Trim and arrange clips to match the music and narration.
- Adjust colors, brightness, and contrast to ensure a consistent and visually pleasing look.
- Periodically preview your video to assess the flow, pacing, and overall quality. This helps identify areas that need improvement.
4. Storytelling
For me storytelling is the most important element in creating engaging and impactful YouTube videos. Stories evoke emotions, share personal experience and create an intimate connection with my audience.
YouTube videos don’t have to be only entertained, it can be a powerful teaching tool.
By using real-life examples and narratives, we can simplify complex concepts and make them easier to digest.
We make sense of our life experiences in part by the stories we learn or tell ourselves. And those stories become even more powerful as they are shared with other people. They become part of who we are, what we believe, and how we see our future.
Use visuals, music, colour and sound effects to enhance the emotional impact of your story. But at the same time: be genuine and authentic in your storytelling. Everyone appreciates honesty and vulnerability.
5. Learn something new every day
Ansel Adams said once, “You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.”
Life experiences are a rich source of material for telling engaging and relatable stories. When we have knowledge, we have the power to achieve many things. Ever since I first started to travel 10 years ago, I have enjoyed learning new things, long before becoming an YouTuber. I’ve become a curious person and wanted to know more about the world around me. Whether it be a new food recipe, way to grow a particular vegetables or something as complex as building furnitures. Creativity can be boosted by learning new skills, by having access to different perspectives, and by understanding how our brain works.
Learning makes life more interesting, and as results, makes your content interesting, while staying true to yourself.
