Anthem of the Heart

Winter is not my most favorite season.

But it provides the foundation for the rest of the year, as important as spring.

Winter passes and now, everything is budding and growing. It produces a newness, and also a renewal, and also vision in our human hearts.

Tim Kreider’ manifesto on the merits of idleness said:

“Idleness is not just a vacation, an indulgence, or a vice: it is as indispensable to the brain as vitamin D is to the body, and deprived of it we suffer a mental affliction as disfiguring as rickets. The space and quiet that idleness provides is a necessary condition for standing back from life and seeing it whole, for making unexpected connections and waiting for the wild summer lightning strikes of inspiration—it is, paradoxically, necessary to getting any work done.

We are a society that defines ourselves by our accomplishments. We are our careers, our extracurriculars, our titles. And one of the most acceptable words in our vernacular? “Busy.”

Without being busy, we think we're worthless. But it's couldn't be further from the truth.

“Look at me! I am that one busy person! Look at all the stuff I'm involved in AND that I do!”

But at some point we realize that we were accomplishing for the praise of others instead of for a life that mattered to us.

We need to stop right there and ask ourselves:

"Am I spending my time in a way that reflects my values?"

I grew up with lots of cats and dogs in the house for most of my childhood. When I left Vietnam to go to Germany to study abroad I haven't had any pets for 5 years. They can be expensive for students and they aren't allowed in college dorm rooms anyways.

And although I consider myself a cat person, generally I'm not too crazy about other people's cats. I miss holding a cat in my arms. Not just any cat, but mine.

Until one day T brought home Caesar as a present for my birthday.

That was 7 years ago.

He was a tiny little kitten back then. Skinny with a floppy belly. And a heart shape on his chest.

I fell in love with Caesar instantly. Because he isn't just any cat. He isn't just my cat. Caesar was his present since he knew how much it meant to me.

You Will Find Your Way Home.”
