Complete Guide to Growing Berries in Containers & Garden
There is nothing more tasty than homegrown berries in your garden.
Comparing to full size fruit trees, compact-sized berry plants have made growing them pretty easy and requires much less space.
You can even grow berries on your balcony!
Today I'm going to show you how to grow berries in containers.
Strawberries are the most popular fruit for the home garden.
They're also one of the easiest and most rewarding crops.
But today I'm going to focus on other types of berry: blueberries, raspberries, currants...

Location
Choose varieties that are reliably winter hardy and well-suited to your growing area.
Berry plants love a sunny to partially shaded location that is warm and protected. The shadier the location, the more sour the berries taste.
Best planting time
It is best to plant berry in spring or autumn.
Autumn is the best time to plant bare-root berry bushes.
Anyone who plants berry bushes in autumn can expect a rich harvest the following year.

Planting distance
The planting distance depends on the variety and the size of the future plant. For blueberries and cranberries it is approximately 60 centimetres.
Currants and gooseberries become quite sprawling and require a planting distance of 130 to 140 centimetres, the larger jostaberries or elderberries even up to 200 centimetres.
Propagation
2 easiest & most reliable methods of growing berries: buying young plants from the nursery or growing from cuttings.
Growing berries from seed isn't difficult but requires patience, as the seeds take a long time (6-12 weeks) to germinate and your berry plants will take 2-3 years to start produce fruits!
Soil
First place the root in water for an hour to allow it to soak up. For growing in container, dig out a planting hole for each bush that is at least twice the ball size so that the roots can spread out nicely in the soil.
Berries love loose soils that should be deep and rich in humus. Pure clay soils tend to cause waterlog, but berry also doesn’t like empty sandy soil.
First, add a layer of clay granulate to help soil absorb water better.
Then a mix of soil with sand and compost.
The pH value of the soil is ideally in the slightly acidic range between 5.5 and 6.0.
Add horn shavings and horse/cow manure.
Add bentonite.
Lightly loosen the soil in the planting hole and remove the root ball from the container, if the bushes are stubborn, tap the bottom of the pot. Score the root ball a centimetre deep in several places to promote fine root growth.
Most berry varieties are shallow-rooted; their roots die quickly if there is a lack of oxygen. Therefore, the root balls should not be placed deeper in the soil than they were in the container they came with.
Pots are especially suitable for blueberries or cranberries since they love acidic soil which can easily be achieved by using rhododendron soil.
Fertilize
You should apply fertilizer twice a year. The first one is carried out in spring so that many buds form. The second one is after the harvest (early autumn) so that the plants can gather strength for the next season. (With the exception of autumn varieties)
Care
In the first few weeks after planting, the soil should always remain moist. In general, berries are somewhat at risk of drought because of their shallow roots, especially in hot summers. That's why I always recommend mulching berry plants with straw to better retain moisture in the soil
Pruning
With a few exceptions, berry plants are best pruned after harvest. Most bear the largest and tastiest fruit on young wood, so these bearing shoots should not be older than three or four years. Older shoots should be removed. These can be recognized by the darker wood color, while young shoots have a light color.
A well-structured shrub has no more than eight to ten evenly spaced main shoots. Never just cut off the tips, but rather the so-called tails close to the ground.
Harvesting & storing
Most soft fruits ripen from June to August.
The berries will ripen gradually, so pick over the plant every few days.
The best time to pick berries in the garden is in the early morning hours before heat builds up in the fruit. They are at the peak of sweetness at this time.
If possible, you should avoid washing raspberries. The delicate fruits can burst open and lose a lot of their aroma.
Place the berries in a single layer and store in the fridge.
Pest Control
Each type of berry has a different care routine, so when in doubt, just Google and do research.
For general pest prevention tips, you can check out my vlog 130.
Otherwise, regular monitoring for pests and diseases is essential in preventing them from affecting your plants.
The biggest problem is spotted wing drosophila, a type of fruit fly.
By the time you know it is in your garden, it's too late to control it.
It lays its eggs in fruit that are just starting to ripen and matures so quickly that when ripe fruit is picked it is contaminated by maggots.
The only way to protect the fruits without using pesticides is covering your plants with net two to three weeks before fruit matures.
