Homemade Shampoo Bar | Hair Care Routine
So many of you have reached out and asked for the shampoo bar recipe. So today I will guide you through the steps of making a shampoo bar completely from scratch.
Learning how to make your own soap bars from scratch is very satisfying. I love making homemade products for our home. There’s always a sense of accomplishment when learning a new practical skill.
Making handmade soap is a creative art and science that is simply addicting.
There are 3 basic methods of making soap/shampoo bar at home.
Cold Process: it takes about 4-6 weeks to cure before using the soap.
Hot Process: heated and cooked for awhile, typically in a crock pot as it needs a constant heat source. Can be used directly once it cools.
Melt & pour – easy process without use of measuring out fats, liquids, lye. Simply cut, melt and pour into soap moulds. Can be used once it’s cooled. The downside of melt & pour method is that you have to buy a soap base.
HOT PROCESS
Today I will only focus on the hot process method.
Set your crock pot on LOW. Put oil mixture in the pot.
Measure water. Add lye to water (never the other way around)
Once the oils are melted, gently pour the lye solution into the oils in the crockpot.
Blend using hand blender until the mixture reaches "trace." (like cold process)
Add in colorant, additives... and stir with spatula.
Now put the lid on and "cook" the mixture. It will not take long, usually about 45 minutes to an hour.
Stir three times during the cook.
When it turns into a translucent mass with a gel like consistency, it is done.
Turn the pot off. Let it cool for a minute or two, then you can add essential oils or scents/salt.
Spoon or pour it into your soap mould! Tamp it down good to get rid of air pockets. Spray the top of the soaps with 99% isopropyl alcohol to prevent discoloration/bubbles.
Red Moroccan Clay Soap (Hot Process)
Lye Solution:
168g Lye
350g distilled water
Oil Mixture:
350g Coconut Oil
350g Olive Oil
280g Sweet Almond Oil
140g Shea Butter
35g Castor Oil
Fragrance & Color:
8 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
16 Drops Lavender Essential Oil
1/2 tbsp Argan Oil
8g Sea Salt
1 tbsp Red Moroccan Clay
The trick is to wet your hair thoroughly first, run the Bar under water briefly (to help start the lathering process).
Work the Shampoo Bar through your hair several times, starting at the root and running it down to the tip.
Natural shampoo bars will not strip the natural oils from your hair, so you will not need the typical moisturizing conditioners that people use to replace the natural oils stripped by detergent shampoos.
When using shampoo bar, ensure that you finish with an acid rinse to help neutralize the pH of your hair. Apple cider vinegar is a good option to balance the pH of your hair. Dilute the pure apple cider vinegar with water with a ratio of 1:12.
